VOTE a GATE
2 at Serenade, and get a What ‘s Up! T-Shirt

They say Ethiopia is the ‘gateway of mankind’ so is it any wonder that Addis seems to be in the middle of some sort of gatemania.

Not only is it good business for the gatemakers and designers, but it’s an announcement to passerbys and visitors - extending a welcome or a warning. For new homes, the gateway is often complete even before the building of the house starts. It’s a statement.
Collins Dictionary defines a gate as a movable barrier, usually hinged, in a wall or fence, opening with a gate, any entrance or way in. gateway (n) entrance with a gate, means of access eg. London’s gateway to Scotland.
Every single address has one - residences, factories, businesses, universities, eating places. Some have guards, some don’t. Some have barbed wire, some open magically before you have even arrived, but others you need to wait outside for what seems forever.
The What’s Up Team took to the streets in Addis and snapped up some gates. As a reader of What’s Up – you’re invited to ‘Vote a Gate’ from the snapshots provided.

Choose ONE of the gateways that appeals to you the most
Say why you like it
Include your telephone number (for notification of first prize)
To select the winner, there will be a draw of names from the gate which receives the most emails. The winner will receive a voucher for 2 to dine at Serenade, and receive a What’s Up T-shirt.
A plaque for the “Best Gate in Addis” will be awarded by the What’s Up Team to the gate owner.
Email your choice of best gate to whatsup@ethionet.et before 25 April, and be part of the Vote a Gate competition.
